The long arc of this work ends off-planet. We're nowhere near ready for that. So we're building the foundation here first.

Now — Earth

AI as a service for agriculture, built on real operations.

There is no food problem in space today because there are no people in space who need feeding at scale. The hard agricultural problems are here: yield volatility, input waste, labour shortages, data locked inside proprietary machines.

Agrei's current work is entirely terrestrial. We build AI tools for dealerships, co-ops, growers, and the R&D companies that supply them. The goal is simple software that holds up in real conditions — not polished prototypes that dissolve after the demo.

This phase generates the revenue, the real-world data, and the institutional credibility that makes the longer arc possible. It also produces the actual technology: models trained on real agricultural data are the only kind worth anything when the stakes go up.

Near-term — Frontier environments

Controlled environments, extreme conditions, thin margins.

Before space there is a long continuum of hostile growing environments: indoor vertical farms, arid regions with no irrigation infrastructure, greenhouses operating in climates they weren't designed for, hydroponic systems that need to run unattended for extended periods.

These are the environments where the technology we're building today gets stress-tested against the limits. Closed-loop systems with no room for waste. Automation that has to work without a technician on call. Sensing and actuation with minimal connectivity.

Agrei will move toward these environments as the core platform matures. They are the intermediate step between a Nebraska co-op and a habitat on Mars.

Long-term — Off-planet

When humans need to grow food somewhere else, we want to be ready.

Permanent human presence beyond Earth will require closed-cycle food production. Not as a luxury — as a survival constraint. Every calorie, every nutrient cycle, every litre of water has to be accounted for and recovered.

The systems that solve this problem are not fundamentally different from what Agrei is building now. They are more constrained, more automated, and less forgiving of error. The engineering disciplines — precision sensing, model-driven decision support, autonomous actuation — are the same disciplines.

We are at the very beginning of this. The honest position today is: build excellent agricultural AI on Earth, stay close to the science at the frontier, and be ready when the moment arrives. That is the plan.
